The horrifying events in Libya have highlighted the need to understand migration. The International Organization of Migration (IOM) has worked since 1951 with nations, regional and international organizations, and nongovernmental agencies to assist migrants and research the issues. It serves as the hub for study as well as working to coordinate efforts to provide humanitarian aid to voluntary and involuntary migrants. The IOM works with intergovernmental agencies such as the European Union, the African Union, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), as well as 42 nongovernmental organizations such as the Lutheran World Federation.
