Given that soccer is the world's most popular participative and spectator sport it is perhaps surprising that Scarecrow Press did not kick off its new Historical Dictionary of Sports series with this title. Instead the series begun with the Historical Dictionary of Competitive Swimming (Lohn, 2010) (RR 2011/247), Historical Dictionary of Soccer being only the seventh volume to appear, following those for basketball, golf (review forthcoming in Reference Reviews), figure skating, the Olympic movement and tennis.
