The book's title implies a comprehensive and possibly encyclopedic approach to the subject of rivers, but this is misleading. This is no reference book; it is a selective guide to the topography of the locations where some 70 rivers reach the sea, although the inclusion of sea‐lochs and major estuaries stretches the concept of “river” to the point of rupture. A more accurate title might be “Where some British rivers reach the sea”.
