Rather insignificantly (i.e. not on either front cover or title‐page) this book notes that it is the “[revised, expanded] 2nd ed.” and that it was originally published in 1979 as American and British Theatrical Biographies: A Directory. The differing sub‐title A Directory versus An Index invites comment.
