How do you tackle world history in a single book? Surely it is impossible. Indeed it may be, but Northrop's team are not the first to attempt such a task: the Oxford historian J.M. Roberts did a history of the world, so did William McNeill of Chicago (The Rise of the West). Even H.G. Wells had a crack at it in his Short History of the World (1925) and I see that the British journalist Andrew Marr has published a History of the World this year.
