Directory of Museums, Galleries and Buildings of Historic Interest in the United Kingdom (5th edition)

This directory made its first appearance as Museums and Special Collections in the United Kingdom 20 years ago and assumed its current title from the third edition of 2003 when publication was taken over by Europa, an imprint since absorbed by Routledge. The fourth edition, covered at length in these columns by Bob Duckett (RR 2009/301), was published as recently as 2008. The new fifth edition here reviewed closely resembles the last two in format and size with something over 2,500 entries, a number that seems to have remained steady despite, as the Foreword laments, “(D)uring the economic recession...
