Before settling down to this review I strolled down to watch the Thames Barrier closing (for the fourteenth time this year) to protect London from flooding. Fortunately we live uphill from it rather than in the riverside flats they are currently building on the Greenwich Peninsula. Normal, everyday human life is risky enough, but over and above all our routine illnesses and accidents, there is the looming risk of disaster: floods, fires, droughts, epidemics and earthquakes have horrendous effects on human communities. If these are not enough, then almost any kind of difference between groups of humans can be fanned...
