Descartes is, according to the Oxford Dictionary of Philosophy, “the founding father of modern philosophy”, a comment which is echoed in many other reference books. For this reason, he is often the first philosopher studied on university courses in the subject. The Oxford Dictionary also says of his theories, “their relentless exposure of the hardest issues, their exemplary clarity, and even their initial plausibility, all contrive to make him the central point of reference for modern philosophy”.
