This book is part of the Princeton Field Guides series. The author is a medical doctor with an interest and knowledge of zoology. There are two forewords by academic zoologists (and Bovid enthusiasts) commending this book and the animals covered.

Bovids is the common name given to the Bovidea, the two-toed, even-toed Artiodactyla with unbranched horns. They include cattle, sheep, antelopes, gazelles and buffalo. The Bovids are ruminant animals. However, other artiodactyls families are also ruminants. There are 279 living species of Bovids. These are divided into 12 tribes, and the descriptions in this book are in tribe order.
