The Cambridge Companions series of philosophy titles is very well established and needs no further comment. Its formula is well known too: separate chapters by different academics.

The chapters of this volume are divided into five parts: Origins, Plato, Aristotle, the Hellenistics and Beyond and Themes. There is a detailed bibliography and an index. The editor has recruited eminent scholars in the field, such as Julia Annas, Richard Kraut, David Sedley and Terence Irwin. The introduction states that its primary aim “is to acquaint the reader with the full breadth of ancient philosophical ethical thinking and recent research on it”....
