Territorial disputes between countries or states are as old as civilization itself. Some disputes, such as the dispute between Argentina and the UK over the Falkland Islands, are well known. Other disputes, such as those over uninhabited islands, borders between countries, or maritime boundaries, are much less familiar, sometimes even to the populations of the countries involved.
