Much has been written about the position of the library within the academic community. Perhaps the most frequently heard statements on the subject are the glowing accounts found in the bulletins and public relations literature of colleges and universities: The library is the heart of the university. Not all librarians would support this statement. Some of us feel it to be out of focus, off target. The teaching/learning process is the main business of the university. The library's role in this activity is to enhance the process by improving student work, facilitating teaching, and by striving to make the connection between teaching and learning more effective.
