On 1 January 1979 Research Publications initiated publication of the Washington Post on microfilm. The Washington Post Index, published as a joint effort with Newspaper Archive Developments Ltd. of Reading, England, but produced entirely at RP's plant in Woodbridge, Connecticut, was envisioned and designed as a complement to the film. The film would be the medium on which the Post was permanently and physically preserved; the Index the means by which users, both contemporary and future, could be given access to the vast amounts of information filmed.
