Purpose

This teaching case study is structured to facilitate discussions on corporate social responsibility (CSR), with a focus on strategies for enhancing its impact and ensuring long-term sustainability in B2B contexts. It is suitable for Master of Business Administration (MBA) students, working executives, particularly those in corporate strategy and sustainability departments, and professionals in policy-making.

Design/methodology/approach

This teaching case study is based on a real-life scenario at one of the twelve reinsurance companies operating in India. It has been developed using publicly available information. However, the company’s name and data have been modified to protect its identity. The case study has a detailed teaching note developed based on teaching experience with MBA students.

Findings

At the beginning of the class, a survey was conducted to assess students' awareness and understanding of CSR. This was followed by a case discussion. After the discussion, a second survey was administered to reassess students' understanding. It included a question from the pre-class survey to measure improvement in comprehension, along with additional questions asking students to evaluate their own learning progress. The survey results were highly encouraging. A summary of both surveys is included in the teaching note.

Originality/value

This teaching case study is an original piece of research. It contributes to the literature with an engaging pedagogical resource to understand CSR and examine strategic decision-making for greater impact and sustainability.
