International organisations are looking at the sport sector to promote environmental awareness among stakeholders. While sport federations can play an important role, many lack the knowledge and tools to effectively do so. To address this research gap, this study has two primary objectives. First, to present a conceptual framework that can help sport federations to integrate environmental sustainability into their organisational structure. Second, to empirically assess the current state of sustainability integration in Flemish federations and suggest pathways for further progress.
This study develops a conceptual framework and combines data from interviews, surveys and policy documents collected among 16 Flemish sport federations.
The sustainability implementation framework is developed and empirically applied, revealing that the federations are highly motivated to implement sustainability due to their concern for the environment. However, their ability to act effectively is constrained by a lack of human and financial resources. Despite this, numerous initiatives are undertaken, though often lacking a strategic foundation. Additionally, impact assessments are uncommon in this sample, limiting the ability to benchmark progress and conduct effective evaluations.
This paper offers sport federations a step-by-step framework to bridge the gap between their current practices and growing expectations to structurally promote environmental sustainability. It also offers insights into how sustainability can be integrated in the sector, along with knowledge that highlights key challenges and opportunities for improvement.
