This article describes the generation of community safety strategies in Italy. They have tended to develop more unevenly than in much of Europe and a plethora of approaches have developed. Social problems differ to those in the other western European countries. It is difficult to describe an Italian model of community safety as growth has tended to reflect power relations between the ‘centre’ and the regions and the political orientations of local authorities.
