CAD/CAM/CAE solutions provider Matra Datavision and Mitutoyo, a leading supplier of metrology equipment, have established a joint-collaboration agreement to develop a new generation of CAD-driven inspection software (see Plate 8).
The new Windows 95-based products will be developed by Matra Datavision exclusively for Mitutoyo as an off-line programming solution for use with the company's advanced co-ordinate measuring machine (CMM) ranges. The software will also provide online programming facilities and a wide range of high-productivity functionality, including in-built collision detection routines.
By interfacing directly with the 3D CAD definition of the finished component and the CMM's Geopak-Win program, the new software will overcome traditional problems of incomplete or corrupted data exchange caused by software translators.

According to Mitutoyo's Senior CMM technical manager Ken Edmett, "The new solution will enable inspection programs to be generated faster and more accurately than ever before. It will maximise CMM equipment uptime and, through adoption of the familiar Windows 95 user interface, will also deliver new standards of productivity and ease of use.
"As well as providing major performance benefits over current PC-based systems, the new software will offer capabilities comparable with the most expensive solutions on the market today. As a result, CMM inspection methods are set to become increasingly attractive across the widest cross-section of manufacturing industry.
"This new relationship also opens the way for the development of a complementary suite of software solutions that harnesses Matra Datavision's established strengths in 3D surface modelling, reverse engineering and rapid prototyping", he adds.
"Mitutoyo is already a reseller of our online inspection software", continues Matra Datavision's director of marketing and sales support, John Kitchingman. "The new agreement represents a natural extension to this existing relationship. It also underlines our long-term strategy of collaborating closely with leading industrial companies to develop world-beating solutions based on best-of-class products. We believe our partnership with Mitutoyo will result in the development of software applications with the potential to become de facto standards for CMM inspection equipment programming in their own right."
Through the agreement,Matra Datavision will be responsible for all software development, with initial customer shipments scheduled for the first quarter of 1999.
