This invention relates to a method and system for identifying a person for use in controlling access to physical or virtual spaces. The method comprises the steps of: storing data relating to the identity of the person in a first memory means; storing data relating to at least one unique biometric characteristic of the person in a second memory means; detecting at least one biometric characteristic on demand; comparing the detected biometric characteristic with the stored biometric characteristic; and releasing the identity data when each detected biometric characteristic matches the stored biometric characteristic. In a preferred embodiment of the system, the memory means, comparing means, and possibly the detecting means, are arranged on a card together resulting in a compact, self-contained personal identification system.
