Fibre-optic splitters
Fibre-optic splitters
Keyword Fibre optics
A new range of polymer fibre-optic splitters characterised by low attenuation and minimal cross-talk has been introduced by Harting (see Plate 14).
The splitters are available in a number of different configurations from 1:2 up to 7:7. In a 1:2 arrangement, light originating from the single-input side is split between the two outputs at the same instant in time, and so on for higher numbers of outputs. Hence one source can control two or more outstations, depending on the style of splitter.

Operational distances of up to 50m can be achieved, depending on the optical power source and splitter type.
Typical applications include secure data transfer for host-to-outstation industrial controls, either point-to-point or as part of a passive optical star topology bus network. Other potential application areas lie in integrated sensor systems and automotive cabling.
