This book provides a detailed analysis of supramolecular polymers by presenting the work of 28 academics from across the world. Supramolecular Polymers comprises 15 chapters divided into five focal areas.
Part I addresses General Formalism and Theoretical Approaches, and contains three chapters discussing the Mechanism of Supramolecular Polymerizations, the Theory of the Supramolecular Liquid Crystal, and design parameters of Polymeric and Monomeric Amphiphiles. Linear, Planar and Three-dimensional Reversible Self-assemblies are presented in Part II. Chapters 4 and 5 discuss Hydrogen-bonded Supramolecular Polymers, and Crystalline Bacterial Cell Surface Layers (S-Layers): A Versatile Self-assembly System, respectively. Assemblies in Complex Block Copolymer Systems are addressed in chapter 6, while chapter 7 discusses the Microstructure and Crystallization of Rigid-coil Comb-like Polymers and Block Copolymers.
The third section of the book presents Assemblies Stabilized by Covalent Bonds. It contains three chapters which discuss Polymers with Intertwined Super-structures and Interlocked Structures, Dendrimeric Supramolecular and Supramacromolecular Assemblies, and Self-assembled Monolayers (SAMs) and Synthesis of Planar Micro-nanostructures. Engineered Planar Assemblies are addressed in Part IV. The Architecture and Applications of Films based on Surfactants and Polymers is presented in chapter 11. Chapters 12 and 13 discuss Supramolecular Polyelectrolyte Assemblies, and Functional Polymer Branches, respectively.
Part V, Conclusions and Outlook, contains the final two chapters and discusses Supramolecular Polymer Chemistry – Scope and Perspective, and Protein Polymerization and Polymer Dynamics Approach to Functional Systems.
Overall, this book is a useful reference text and will be of benefit to academic and industrial chemists and chemical engineers alike. Personally, I found that some chapters were easier to understand than others. This was not necessarily due to the material content but more to do with the editor's style of writing.
