Raytek, a leading worldwide provider of infrared (IR) thermometry, announces the addition of a motorised, remotely- controlled variable target focus capability to its Marathon MM Series of high- performance non-contact IR temperature sensors. Raytek is currently the only manufacturer of non-contact IR temperature sensors that offers this motorised, remote- controllable variable focus feature (Plate 4).

This new variable focus feature provides OEMs and production engineers the flexibility of needing only one sensor type for multiple sensor applications. This ready-to-use solution greatly reduces the requirement for replacement sensors stock, resulting in considerable cost savings. Users can easily adjust the focus of measurement targets, either by push-button on the rear of the instrument, or remotely via the RS232/RS485 connection from a PC where adjustments can be seen real- time on video. The sensor is sealed according to IP 65 standards. All motorised focussing components are contained within the sensor housing so that the unit can withstand even the harshest environmental conditions.
Flexible optical capabilities
Users can select from either standard fixed focus sensors, or sensors with the new variable focus option, both model types have a focus range of between 200 mm and 2.2 m from the measurement target. Marathon MM sensors are also available as close focus models with fixed optics that enable targets as small as 0.5mm to be measured from a distance of 150 mm. All of the sensors provide integrated through-the-lens sighting, plus either laser or video sighting for correct aiming and target location. The MM Series also provides real-time video monitoring, image capture and storage capabilities. This unique optional feature enables engineers to continuously observe and record temperature variations in their process, especially in sealed environments or enclosures not directly visible to the eye, such as the inside of machines or furnaces.
The new Marathon MM Series platform, which covers a temperature range of-40-3,000°C, consists of five IR temperature sensor models, each with a specific measurement wavelength and temperature range appropriate for a variety of process control and monitoring applications. All sensors feature identical hardware and include Raytek DataTemp Multidrop software to enable easy and consistent installation and remote configuration of multiple networked sensors.
A complete range of accessories is available for Marathon MM sensors,including a protective housing for harsh environments (ThermoJacket), air purge and water cooling accessories, protective windows, high-temperature cable, and more.
Ideal applications for the Marathon MM Series sensors include: steel and metals processing (foundry/forging operations and heat treating); glass bending,forming, tempering, annealing and sealing; paper processing (ink drying/curing and lamination); plastics processing and thermoforming; and semiconductor processing.
