This update first considers recent developments in nano-electromechanical system (NEMS) technology which is effectively the nanoscale equivalent of MEMS and has prospects to yield sensors with unprecedented levels of sensitivity. It then discusses nanobiosensors – sensors which combine biologically-active compounds such as enzymes and DNA with nanomaterials and nanostructures.
