This study aims to understand the dynamic human interface pushing the boundaries of sustainable development to a broader comprehension of socioeconomic aspects, where Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a factual testimony. Traditional knowledge and cultural expressions embodying a vast repository of traditional wisdom have an equitable opportunity to contribute to the ends of SDGs. Traditional craft, a key component of handicraft, presents a blend of traditional wisdom and advancement of economic means. However, globalization and consumerism have marked a paradigm shift in the production methodologies in this sector.
A case study approach was adopted to present a sustainable value chain analysis of Dhokra craft, an Indian traditional craft. Data was collected through semi-structured questionnaires and interviews with artisans. Thematic analysis was employed to derive the research findings.
The sustainable value chain analysis reveals a lower degree of economic sustainability among the other social and environmental sustainability components. Adaptation to sustainable approaches aligned with SDG targets, tailored to the craft’s needs and technological intervention in strengthening sustainability components, becomes crucial while guiding the way forward.
The traditional craft studied in the present study supports household income for the practising artisan community. The challenges faced by the community have a direct relation to their socioeconomic development. The sustainability assessment identifies critical areas for intervention within the craft ecosystem, which can be replicated in other traditional crafts.
This research uniquely integrates traditional craft and sustainability domains through sustainable value chain analysis. The handicraft sector plays a crucial role in shaping the economy, particularly in developing nations. Tailored SDG targets and technological intervention to enhance sustainability highlight a rigorous and evidence-based foundation for future research.
