The case study was originally developed as a strategic and operations management course assignment during a 2024 visit to Chelsea F.C. in the United Kingdom. All information has been obtained exclusively through secondary research available to the public. As such, all references to companies and individuals have not been disguised in the case study.
The case examines the operational and financial challenges facing Chelsea Football Club following its ownership transition from Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich to the American-led BlueCo consortium, headed by Todd Boehly. Despite Chelsea F.C.’s global prominence and history of success, the club has struggled financially, consistently operating at a loss. The new owner’s strategies, combined with managerial instability – five different managers in two seasons – and declining on-pitch performance, have exacerbated the club’s financial problems.
The case delves into key issues, including Chelsea F.C.’s compliance with UEFA’s Financial Fair Play and the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules, which limit overspending. However, Chelsea F.C. continues to operate at a deficit. The case also explores the managerial turmoil that has resulted in inconsistent team performance, with Chelsea F.C. finishing 12th in the 2022–2023 season, far below expectations. This instability, coupled with rising financial losses, raises concerns about the club’s long-term sustainability and its ability to maintain its competitive edge in the Premier League.
The case poses critical questions for Todd Boehly and BlueCo about how Chelsea F.C. can navigate these challenges and rebuild its future in the world of football, highlighting the need for strategic and operational changes.
This case study allows students to examine how a historically renowned organization, such as Chelsea Football Club, could experience operational turmoil because of internal operational inefficiencies as well as macroeconomic factors.
