Climate change and tourism work: a perspective paper

Jerneja Šavric is based at Faculty of Tourism, University of Maribor, Maribor, Slovenia. She is the research Project Manager for the Faculty of Tourism, University of Maribor, Slovenia. She has a PhD in Sociology and her expertise is in project management, European funding and tourism and climate change.

Adele Ladkin is based at Department of Management, Strategy and Innovation, Bournemouth University, Poole, UK. She is Professor of Tourism Employment and Deputy Director of the International Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Research (ICTHR), Bournemouth University Business School, UK. Her research expertise is tourism and hospitality workforce and employment, specifically labour mobility, fair work, employee wellbeing and digital transformations of work. She has extensive experience in developing Tourism and Hospitality International Postgraduate studies, contributing to global capacity building in education. She is Associate Editor for Annals of Tourism Research. Adele works with UNWTO as an expert advisor for human resources in tourism and is motivated to undertake research to inform policy to drive positive change for employees and organisations, supporting livelihoods in tourism.

Chris Cooper is based at Carnegie School of Sport, Leeds Becket University, Leeds, UK. He is a Professor in the Carnegie School of Sport, Leeds Beckett University, UK. Chris has more than forty years of experience in tourism and has worked as a researcher and teacher in every region of the world. Chris was co-founder of Progress in Tourism, Hospitality and Recreation Research and the International Journal of Tourism Research and is now the Co-Editor of Current Issues In Tourism. He is a member of the editorial board for leading tourism, hospitality and leisure journals and has authored a number of leading text and research books in tourism, including “Essentials of Tourism” for Sage. He is the co-series editor of the influential Channel View book series “Aspects of Tourism”. Chris works with international agencies including the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the European Union, the International Labour Organization, the OECD, the Inter American Development Bank and ASEAN. He held the Chair of the UNWTO’s Education Council from 2005 to 2007 and was awarded the United Nations Ulysses Medal for contributions to tourism education and policy in 2009. Chris is currently working on destination adaptation to climate change with partners in Croatia and Slovenia.

Maja Turnšek is based at Faculty of Tourism, University of Maribor, Maribor, Slovenia. She is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Tourism at the University of Maribor, Slovenia. She has a doctorate in media and communication science, in the field of digital media. She was previously Vice-Dean for Research and Chair of the Diploma Commission. Maja’s research interests include the processes of digitalisation in tourism: political economy of new media, platform work and algorithmic management and climate change, specifically climate change adaptation and mitigation, aquaponics, geothermal energy. She is the recipient of multiple European and Slovenia funded projects in relation to these areas.
