Ç‐Dilla is one of the world's leading developers of encryption and access control software products, which are used by a wide range of publishers to protect and market their own products. Encryption and access control are becoming increasingly common in electronic publishing; this article describes how such systems work, comments on why publishers need them and interprets the implications for libraries and librarians as customers.
