Addressing the limited literature focused on methodological citations within research articles, the purpose of this paper is to analyze a series of indicators of research quality used in partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM).
A comprehensive review of PLS-SEM application in three top-tier journals assesses a range of criteria, including Price Index, citation counts, reasoning and model metrics. For the period from 2016 to 2022, 165 articles were identified for use in this study.
Results show a growing trend toward the publication of articles with low methodological rigor in regard to PLS-SEM analysis. The results also highlight stark contrasts in methodological rigor between articles with high citation recency and frequency versus those labeled as low.
The findings of this research point to potential shortcomings in how to apply and report analysis methods while also emphasizing the need to increase the use of the most current methodological developments.
