Article Type: Editorial From: VINE: The journal of information and knowledge management systems, Volume 39, Issue 1

It is a great honor for us to serve as the new editors of VINE – The journal of information and knowledge management systems. Professor M. Stankosky, Editor Emeritus has transformed the Journal from a journal of library science, to one with a much broader scope that embraces the latest development of information and knowledge management systems and is impacting a wide spectrum of influential readers. We would like to express our thanks to all members of the current editorial review boards and especially to Michael who has laid down a solid foundation upon which VINE can further build on.

Knowledge management (KM) with its associated systems is an interdisciplinary area of study that needs to be enriched with the culture of innovative organizations and enterprises. Much effort needs to be made by both academics and practitioners to make it into a flourishing discipline. Also unlike other academic subjects, knowledge management has a strong application orientation and is greatly influenced by economic development within the context region.

Over the last decades knowledge management started in Europe, spread across the Atlantic to the Americas and is now also growing fast in the Asian-Pacific region, notably in Australia, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, India,Malaysia and Thailand. We hope to continue the International focus of VINErepresenting authors from every region.

The recent global financial crisis, despite its devastating effect on our economic front has nevertheless given us an opportunity to reflect on what the new value system of our knowledge based society and knowledge intensive enterprises should be, what the yardstick should be and what kind of social-technical economic systems need to be built. On this front, there is a lot of challenging and pioneering work for both authors and readers of this journal that can be contributed to our future success in industry, social enterprises, education, NGO and governments. As editors we look forward to supporting this progress.

In this issue, we are particularly grateful to contributors from the 5th International Conference on Intellectual Capital and Knowledge Management compiled with the great enthusiasm of Dr Kevin J. O’Sullivan. We look forward to continuing VINE’s development as a knowledge transfer platform cultivating a great community of practitioners and scholars across different disciplines and borders.
