Positive armour clamping for EExe gland

Keywords: Remora, Cables, Corrosion prevention

It is reported that problems associated with the gland terminations of wire braid armoured cables can be successfully eliminated with the PosiBraid CKXT glands available from Remora Electrical Ltd (Plate 9).

The conventional methods of stripping back and "pigtailing" braided armour is time-consuming and is said to be no longer required, saving hours of installation time for contractors. The PosiBraid CKXT gland is stated to be easy to fit and incorporates a clamping cone designed for use with steel or copper braid on cables utilising 0.8mm armour wires. The gland is essentially a two-piece assembly with captive inner components which also minimise assembly time and "lost" parts, particularly when working in restricted spaces.

The brass inner components are moulded into a non-corrosive polyester filled body claiming complete protection in hostile environments. A hard gripper ring is incorporated for sealing against the outer cable sheath, together with a gland body "O" ring to give full IP68 ingress protection. A polypropylene gasket is also supplied for the bulkhead connection.

With the gland inner fitted, the outer is slipped over the cable prior to stripping the protective sheath to expose the braiding to a length of 15mm. This exposed braid is simply turned back over the outer sheath before the cable is passed through the inner part of the gland and the outer then tightened. The built-in clamping cone effectively grips the armour, providing an effective and efficient termination with the minimum of preparation.

The PosiBraid CKXT glands can be supplied in nine sizes to cover cable outside diameters ranging from 3 to 68mm. They have been tested and certified to the following standards:

BS6121 Part 37 1987;

EExeII by SIRA;EN50 014:1977 and BS EN 50014:1993;EN50 019:1977 and BS EN 50019: 1994;IEC 529;Ingress Protection to IP68.
