CORROSION OF SILVER in Molten Salts

Molten salts have potential applications as inexpensive nuclear reactor fuels or coolants; however, their use for such purposes is restricted because they are highly corrosive to metal container materials. To obtain basic corrosion data which may be helpful to design engineers, N.B.S. scientists have exposed silver single crystals to fused sodium chloride under controlled conditions. The results obtained show that the presence of a temperature gradient in the experiments produces the most pronounced effect.
