With one or two exceptions, writes G. A. Grizzell, chief chemist of Applied Chemicals Ltd., temporary protectives rely on the same principle as paint films, namely, to prevent the surface of the metal from coming into contact with moisture and the atmosphere, with the inevitable growth of corrosion. The nomenclature, ‘temporary protective’, although accepted, is somewhat misleading because in this context ‘temporary’ means that the protective film should be easily removable and has nothing to do with the protection claimed or achieved.
