TOWARDS the end of 1945, the new Adant plant for the manufacture of cube sugar had been lying idle for some considerable time. The most important part of the Adant cube‐making plant is the mould and its container the flask, as these determine the number and size of sugar slabs, which are eventually cut into cubes. Most of the moulds and flasks at the end of 1945 had been transferred from the old plant, as mechanically they were still serviceable. Originally these steel flasks and moulds had been galvanised, but this protective coating had worn off in places and, as this condition had an adverse effect on the sugar, the protective coating had to be renewed. After much experimenting and visits to continental Adant plants, it was decided to install a zinc metal spraying plant. Metallisation Ltd., of Dudley, were approached and a plant was set up, which commenced blasting and zinc spraying of moulds and flasks in May 1946.
