Cathodic protection of aluminium structures. Aluminium, especially with small wall thickness, is often of limited use for permanent structures in water and soil, chiefly owing to the risk of pitting. Pitting can be counteracted by means of cathodic protection. The potential interval within which reliable protection can be obtained, however, is both small and dependent on the existing combination of alloy and environment. Swedish experience of the application of cathodic protection to aluminium has hitherto been satisfactory. There is, however, a need for more precise specification of the criteria for cathodic protection than is possible today.
