Steel is one of the most easily corroded metals known to man. This is particularly true in the case of steelwork exposed to the corrosive environment of salt air or water or a combination of both in the form of spray. Nevertheless, steel is comparatively inexpensive, easily fabricated and is reasonably strong, so that, as long as it is possible to provide an economical protective coating to the exposed surfaces, steel will continue to be used with an ever‐increasing demand.
