Between April and October 1957 the North Thames Gas Board constructed a 24‐in. pipeline between Shellhaven and Romford for the conveyance of oil refinery gas, the length of the line being 15½ miles. In recent years the Board has been trying out several new methods of gas‐making, including converting oil to gas by catalytic methods. The laying of the pipeline inaugurates the scheme to use refinery gases to turn into town's gas.
