Three countries dominate the scene in the Western world's metal‐finishing industries. The U.K., birthplace of electroplating, anodising, phosphating and many metal‐colouring techniques, remains pre‐eminent in certain respects. The U.S.A. with its enormous industrial potential and amazing virility has taken the lead in many ways—particularly in accelerating and automating metal finishing. The third, Germany, has long been respected for its occasional valuable contribution, but has emerged during its post‐war rehabilitation as a leading light in finishing developments. An enigmatic fourth, Russia, remains outside the scope of this brief appraisal which outlines some of the metal‐finishing techniques of continental origin now carried out by Roto‐Finish Ltd.
