NACE International and SSPC announce joint task force
Keywords Coatings,NACE, SSPC
NACE International, The Corrosion Society, and SSPC, the Society for Protective Coatings, have announced the formation of a joint task force to explore closer collaboration and potential unification. The joint announcement was issued by NACE Executive Director Gerald Shankel and SSPC Executive Director Bernard Appleman.
The task force will focus on the value collaboration and/or formal unification can add to the services provided by the societies to their respective members. Findings and recommendations were expected to be presented to the NACE and SSPC Boards of Directors in early 1999. No specific time frame has been projected for a full unification, should that be the recommendation of the task force.
Both societies have many common interests and objectives, and their memberships consist of engineers, technicians and suppliers involved in corrosion prevention and control. There is already significant overlap in the membership with approximately 2,500 individuals currently belonging to both societies. That represents about 30 per cent of SSPC's 8,200 members and 15 per cent of NACE's 16,000 members.
The primary difference between the two organizations is that NACE is involved with a broad spectrum of corrosion control issues while SSPC has traditionally concentrated on paint and coatings with a focus on contractors.
Messrs Shankel and Appleman pointed out that their organizations have been working together on standards development for almost ten years. During that time, society officials and members have frequently discussed the need for, and benefit of, increased cooperation.
During recent strategic planning processes, conducted independently by the two societies, they separately recognized the need for partnering with other groups and the effect that global and domestic changes are having on how associations should best serve their membership.
