Layer wound slicklines

Keywords: Sandvik, Stainless steel, Spooling

Sandvik Steel and its appointed agent, Grampian Test & Certification Limited, in Aberdeen, have announced that they have developed spooling equipment that is believed to be the first of its kind designed specifically for complete layer winding of slicklines.

Spools are said to be guaranteed with no crossovers so that wirelines will payoff smoothly from the first to the last layer. This gives the end user the key benefit of the elimination of mechanical damage to the wireline. Grampian states that they will be winding exclusively Sandvik's stainless steel slicklines on to customers' wireline drums, and are therefore able to guarantee also no contact with, or contamination from, carbon wireline materials. The potential corrosion problems associated with carbon pickup will therefore be avoided.

Sandvik controls its wireline production from steel melt through to finished product and this is being extended by Sandvik Steel and Grampian who can now control the supply of high quality, layer wound slicklines to point of use.

Sandvik produces corrosion resistant and weld-free stainless steel slicklines in continuous lengths up to 25,000 feet and from 1.83mm (0.072in.) up to 3.18mm(0.125in.) diameter. Material quality available ranges from Sandvik Sanicro 28 grade for use in sour well conditions to AISI 304 and AISI 316 grades for sweet wells and wells with lower corrosion conditions. Grampian Test &Certification holds Sandvik wirelines in stock and is able to offer a fast turn round for spooling.
