ALL those concerned with the safety of flight would like to see the compression‐ignition engine come into general use. This could happen if engines working on this cycle were made to approach the power‐weight ratios of modern petrol engines. When setting out to judge the prospects of compression‐ignition one must necessarily inquire deeply into the difficulties holding up progress. This article is written to air some of the difficulties which block the road to high performance; at the same time there is no intention of taking up a pessimistic point of view.
