The purpose of the book, the author states, is to present currently available information on the properties of metallic materials at elevated temperatures for the use of the design engineer. industrial uses of metals and alloys at high temperatures have greatly increased and the temperatures required for many operations are steadily rising. In the chemical and petroleum industries, alloy steels and stainless steels are used in large amounts for service at moderately elevated temperatures. Industrial furnaces consume large quantities of heat‐resistant alloys. The more recent and very rapid development of the gas turbine has very greatly stimulated research and development towards improved high temperature alloys, and has led to great activity in the special area of the production world from which high temperature alloys come. Present gas turbines require materials to operate at temperatures up to 815° C. under high stress due to centrifugal forces and under other stresses, and in this application improved performance of the materials for blades to permit higher inlet gas temperature is of first importance towards improvement of efficiency and for successful competition with other means of providing power.
