The future of Concorde

HARDLY had the new Socialist Government, and the new Minister of Aviation, Mr Roy Jenkins, grasped the reins of power following the October General Election when a White Paper was issued which contained a clause threatening the future of the Concord project. A strict review of all Government expenditure was forecast with the object of relieving the strain on the balance of payments and releasing resources for more productive purposes by cutting out expenditure on items of low economic priority, such as ‘prestige projects’. The White Paper went on to state that the new Government had already communicated to the French Government their wish to re‐examine urgently the Concord project.
