LORD Plowden made his first public comment on his committee's investigation into the aircraft industry, and on the reactions to the Plowden Report after its publication, during a debate on the report in the House of Lords. His speech gave a valuable insight as to the way in which the committee approached their task, sketched in the background to the report, and helped to put its conclusions into perspective. It was somewhat surprising that Lord Plowden in the course of his speech quoted the cost of the F‐111 as its basic price without adding the £200 million, in round figures, that was spent on the TSR.2, which, on the present order of fifty, is £4 million per aircraft. The following is a condensed version of his comments.
