A recent notice of proposed rule‐making (NPRM) issued by the FAA relates to floor proximity emergency escape path markings and proposes new performance standards for these markings to provide visual guidance for emergency cabin evacuation where all sources of cabin lighting more than 4 feet above the aisle floor are totally obscured by smoke. This NPRM is one of a number that are being issued during the next year or so that will cover aspects of crashworthiness, fire prevention and passenger survival.
