Recent statements have emphasised the high priority that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is giving to cabin safety and significant improvements are believed to be possible through the application of new technology. FAA Administrator Donald D. Engen has quoted examples such as fire blocking layers on passenger and crew seats, more fire resistant liners in cargo compartments, improved seat restraint and the use of anti‐misting fuel to suppress post crash fires. Rulemaking has already been initiated in a number of these areas and the results of a research programme this year should yield the kind of data that will allow considerable advances to be made.
