Materials researchers at NASA Lewis Research Center have developed a low‐cost fibre push‐out test apparatus for studying the fundamental behaviour of fibre‐reinforced composites. The test measures both the fibre/matrix bond strength and the force of friction between the sliding fibre and matrix, both of which are important determinants of the bulk composite's strength and stiffness. The test can be used to evaluate the effects of fibre coatings and composite processing conditions on both debonding and friction shear strengths.
