Of all the thermoplastic materials offered by Textron Aerospace Fasteners in its line of ACP fasteners,it claims that Victrex Peek polymer is by far the most popular.
According to Clyde Simmons, technical services engineer at Textron Aerospace Fasteners, "We offer threaded fasteners in a variety of materials but most customers choose fasteners made with Peek polymer because of its excellent properties and superior test data".
One reason for the popularity of the material is its resistance to a wide range of inorganic and organic chemicals. Fasteners made with Victrex Peek polymer are reportedly extremely tough, and have excellent impact resistance and fatigue strength over a wide temperature range.
Says Simmons, "Customers like the higher strength and temperature resistance of Peek polymer as well as the ability to maintain mechanical properties in harsh chemical environments".
The Peek polymer fasteners are used in a wide range of aerospace, marine, medical, sporting goods and recreational applications. In aerospace applications, for example, they can significantly reduce the weight of fastening systems while providing ample strength in structural and non-structural applications.
"The Peek polymer fasteners reportedly can cut weight by up to 80 per cent when compared to current metal fastening systems", Simmons adds.
Another reason for choosing the Peek polymer, he says is that "It has minimal interference with electronically sensitive applications, magnetic fields in radar equipment, instrument housings, or brain scanning equipment.
