Plate 11 Steve Salt, Managing Director, Serck Aviation, showing HRH the Duke of Kent an aviation tubular heat exchanger on the occasion of the official opening of the new factory at Wharfdale Road, Birmingham
Among the distinguished guests were the Lord-Lieutenant of the West Midlands,Mr Bob Taylor and the Lord Mayor of Birmingham, as well as representatives and guests of Serck Aviation. Providing 40,000sq.ft. (3,700sq. m) of production space and 10,000sq. ft (930sq.m) of engineering and administration offices, the new purpose-built works are capable of being extended by as much as 100 per cent.
First, the Duke, who is Vice President of British Trade International, was shown the modern computer facilities which control design and engineering. Then he saw the advanced computer-controlled machining centres and a purpose built impact forming operation, which produces highly accurate thin aluminium tube.
The other area seen by the Duke and his party was the repair and overhaul department which demonstrated how the company services its world-wide customers and maintains its reputation for quality. This facility is also essential to development of other types of heat exchanger. One recent example is the advanced high temperature air/air buffer cooler which provides positive pressure cooling to the main engine bearings of the P&W4090 engine powering the Boeing 777-300 aircraft.
