Advanced deceleration impact research facilitiesKeywords: DERA, Rugged Systems

Rugged Systems has signed a £300,000 contract with Farnborough-based DERA to supply and install advanced deceleration impact facilities for aerospace and automotive research. Designed and developed by ARIES, the new facilities will be used to reproduce the inertial effects of real crashes more accurately than is currently possible in the UK. This will enable detailed accident investigation and safety research to be undertaken, as well as more specific aircraft and military hardware tests.

Following an initial feasibility study, Rugged Systems will oversee the installation of the new facilities built by Spanish-based ARIES. The system will combine flexibility with accurate speed control and will be capable of varied test runs and fast turnaround. These will include standard deceleration pulses for FIA and automotive testing, such as restraints and airbags, as well as more specific impacts that can be increased in 1G increments in a range of 1-50G. This is particularly useful for tests and research to military standards.
