Madam, With reference to the comments of Mr F. C. Francis, in his Presidential address now published in Aslib Proceedings (vol. 10, no. 11, Nov. 1958, p. 268), on the distinctions, if any, between librarians and information officers, it may be of interest to record my impressions of the position in the United States. On the occasion of the recent International Conference on Scientific Information, at Washington, I had the pleasure of several discussions with professors in the library schools, and I am particularly indebted to Prof. George Bonn, of Rutgers University.
