US commendation for Asian Libraries Editor
The prestigious US publication, Library Journal, has named 42 books published between January 1997 and March 1998 as the library profession's most outstanding literature. Only one of these books is in the field of collection development, and the joint author/editor is Dr Gary Gorman, Editor of Asian Libraries. Published by Greenwood Press in Westport,Connecticut, Collection Management for the 21st Century: A Handbook for Librarians contains chapters dealing with a range of issues facing information professionals in the broad field of collection development and collection management. Gorman and his co-author, Ruth Miller (University Librarian at Southern Indiana University, and formerly of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology), conceived the work as a guide to the changes most likely to affect the nature of collection development in coming years. Library Journal submits titles to its best professional reading panel of seven eminent practitioners and educators in the USA, who then choose those works that represent "the best" literature in the various sub-disciplines of library science. The purpose of this exercise is to guide information professionals in preparing themselves to deal with emerging trends in librarianship in the panel's words, "these publications offer working librarians private one-to-one continuing education courses taught by some of the profession's leading authorities." Collection Management for the 21st Centurywas chosen because of its substantial coverage of the most significant changes occurring in collection development at the turn of the century. This is the fifth of Dr Gorman's books to receive similar commendations from either the American Library Association or The Library Association (UK).
